Anti Chess

Bookmark and Share

The lights dim, the crowd waits expectantly, the two players' brows are sufficiently furrowed. The mental gymnastics begin, as the two gladiators engage in a battle to the death for ultimate… defeat. The pieces on the chessboard can but look on as one by one, their kind is sacrificed by a general intent on losing all. This one's not for the faint hearted.

Rules

The rules of this game are the same as for normal Chess (starting position and piece movement) with the following differences:

  • No castling is allowed.
  • A pawn can promote to king (when it reaches last rank).
  • There is no check or checkmate. The king may be captured like any piece.
  • Player, who loses all pieces including the king or cannot make a legal move, wins the game.
  • In case of a stalemate the one with the lower number of pieces wins. The game results in a draw if the number of pieces is equal, irrespective of their type.
  • Capturing of the opponent's pieces is mandatory. The player can make a move only with a piece that can capture an opponent's piece, when more than one capture is available, the player may exercise choice. Only if the player cannot capture any opponent piece, he/she can make a move with any piece.
  • Player can exercise the special power of swapping any two pieces of his/her own at any point in the game. The swap is considered as a move of the player. Only one swap is allowed for a player in a game.
  • ‘Touch to move rule’ is applicable if the move is a legal one.

Rules of the tournament

  • All the rounds are played according to Swiss league.
  • Pairing for each player will be put up 15 min before the round.
  • The player with the highest points wins the tournament.
  • If there is a tie for the first or second place, deciding match will be conducted again between the players with same points.
